A few words about the Municipality

The Municipality of Preveza is located at the northwestern part of the mainland of Greece, to the southern of Epirus, at the mouth of Amvrakikos gulf and it touches the Ionian Sea and the Amvrakikos gulf. Moreover, it is the capital administrative centre of the prefecture of Preveza.

It is extended to the south of the port of Preveza, to the north, up to Acheron River canyon (Trikastro) and to the horizontal axe, to the west of the Ionian Sea, Monolithi beach, up to the east to Stefani and the edge of the peninsula at Laskara.

Preveza is a harbor of great importance to the Prefecture of Epirus.

Since 2002, it is connected to Aktio of Aetoloakarnania, by the underwater tunnel Preveza – Aktio, a tunnel of high technology.

The Municipality’s current form arose consequently to Kallikratis Plan, aftermerging the Municipality of Louros and Zalongo into Preveza’s municipality.

The Municipality of Preveza covers an area of 66, 8 km2, while the population is estimated at 31.733 citizens, according to 2011 census.

Municipal Entity of Zalongo

The Municipal Entity of Zalongo is characterized by its great historical importance (Zalongo Monument, Ancient Cassope, Riza Castle), and by its natural beauty as well (Artolithia beach).

It is consisted of the local municipal communities of: Kanali, Vrachos, Kamarina, Kryopigi, Myrsini, Nea Sampsounta, Nea Sinopi, Riza, Cheimadio and Ekklision. It covers an area of 130.078 km2.

That area is also attractive to tourists. Expanded beaches, unique shores, interesting archaeological and historic monuments, many natural beauties, and mild climate provide the ideal conditions for the fast touristic development. The area is characterized by marvellous landscapes with living tradition, creative people and great perspectives.

At the Municipal Entity of Zalongo the visitor can enjoy the endless beaches, under the hot sun and get stunned by the green and blue colours. Hotels and rooms to let of all types, bars, tavernas and cafeterias offer to the visitor a comfortable and pleasant stay.

The beaches cover an area of 20 kilometers and they are the ideal places to go surfing, sailing, water-skiing, parachuting, boat rental, and fishing. Also, there are many sports facilities for tennis, basketball, volleyball and other sports as well, while trekking is also an option to the forest “Lekatsa”, the Zalongo area and the Vrachos beach.

Municipal Entity of Louros

The Municipal Entity of Louros is situated at the centre of the Municipality of Preveza and it is 25 km far from the city of Preveza. It is consisted of the below local municipal communities: Louros, Ano Rachi, Vryssoula, Kotsanopoulo, Revmatia, Skiadas, Kontates, Sfinoto, Stefani, Trikastro and Oropos village.

Landmarks of the area are the river Louros, the beautiful – ideal to strolling–mountains, the Hades Gates, the forest of Agios Varnavas.

The village of Louros is close to river Louros estuary, which is full of olive groves and orchards and not far from the Ionian Sea shores. There are many remains of an ancient Hellenistic tower and a part of the ancient Roman aqueduct of Nicopolis, with a part of the National Wetland Park belonging to the above municipality and also to Filippiada, Zalongo and Preveza.

The name of Louros originates from a paraphrase of the name of Orourou River. According to other sources, the name derives from the existence of many vitex trees (shrub trees are abundant in the area), which people used to call loures and used to plait their branches in order to construct agricultural buildings.

The region is also famous for the vineyards with some special variations for wine and tsipouro production. The olive oil is of excellent quality and to the north there is a great number of bee farming.
